Gundlach started as a favor between brothers. Bill Gundlach was a sales rep for a new roofing shingle Johns Manville had just brought to the U.S. market, and he needed a way to cut it. His brother Beno designed a hand-operated cutter, received a U.S. patent, and built it in a small shop in Belleville, Illinois.

Asphalt floor tile arrived a few years later. Several manufacturers came back to Beno and asked whether the shingle cutter could be modified for the new format. It could. That request is how Gundlach entered floor covering — not by targeting the trade, but by being asked in by the people already working in it.

Coming up on a century, the company remains in Belleville and remains run by the Gundlach family. They manufacture directly and partner selectively, with companies whose philosophy and standards line up with their own. The tools reach professional installers worldwide through a distributor network, and Gundlach has stayed committed to selling through it rather than around it.

Raleigh Tile® opened in Beckley in 1985. Gundlach had been in business fifty-eight years by then. Most of the lines we carry are younger than we are; Gundlach is one of the few that isn't, and one of fewer still with the founder's name on the box and the family in the building. In 2027 they turn 100. We're glad to be carrying the tools into it.
